Record Store Day is April 22, NZ happenings

Slowboat Records

Record Store Day turns ten this year. It's sometimes seen these days as being over-run with major labels hogging the pressing plants to churn out crap (Africa by Toto anyone? NOPE) but there's still the core idea, celebrating independent record stores. That has value. So, what's going on?

AUCKLAND:
Real Groovy is open from 9am-7pm, with live music, prizes (incl a Pro-Ject turntable) and RSD special releases and exclusive vinyl deals.

"We here at Real Groovy are critical of the increasing commercialisation of Record Store Day, so this year we are focusing on giving back to our loyal customers and community."

11am - Badcorporation
12pm - Oscar Dowling
1pm - ECHO OHs
2pm - X Features
3pm - Contenders

Southbound Records promises 300 RSD releases, live music from Ghost  Town and more, open from 9am. Also an instore exhibition of photos taken at Zwines and of the late 1970’s Auckland Punk Scene by Jeremy Templer - for sale too.

Marbecks has live music from Princess Chelsea, Tom Cunliffe, Lydia Cole, Galaxybear, and DJs, more to come.

Check out Flying Out on Pitt St, they have few FNun related RSD goodies I hear and live intstores from Shayne P Carter, Fazerdaze, Merk, X Features, Billy TK, DJ Roger Shepherd & more.

The recently shuttered Rebel Soul Records is doing a one day pop up at Barber Dans at 459 K Rd.

NEW PLYMOUTH:
Vinyl Countdown has some goodies, live instores, and their always popular sausage sizzle. "Great music thanks to the Vinyl Club DJs and live music from 1pm. Giveaways and Prizes throughout the day. And the Free sausage sizzle - always a hit! We'd love to see you here at Vinyl Countdown on this exciting day. Open at 9am!
LIVE MUSIC:  1pm - Sonic Delusion / 2pm - This Little Badge / 3pm - Jon Toogood

TAURANGA has Vinyl Destination, which recently celebrated it's 2nd birthday.

PALMERSTON NORTH has a pop-up record fair happening at Square Edge Community arts 11am - 4pm, with vinyl DJs, record painting - free entry.

WELLINGTON:

Death Ray Records is celebrating their survival, given they didn't think they'd still be here by this stage of the year.

"We honestly can't believe we'll be open for Record Store Day in under 2 weeks. Around 4 months ago Death Ray was dead in the water. Help from all sorts have kept Death Ray trundling along. So we've made it to RSD 2017!!!!. After that date who knows?

... If you don't know anything about RSD or if you are one of those excellent people that say "I don't go to RSD because there will be too many people and everyday is RSD anyway" read what RSD means to the owners, the patrons and the community.

RSD was set up to pay respects to independent record stores for existing. We're not talking JB or the Whare but real locally run record stores. What can you do? Go to a record store and immerse yourself in the surroundings. Pay thanks to the lords of rock n roll that these places exists. Be a part of a special day for the owners...."

Slow Boat Records has RSD releases and live acts:

2pm: Instore performance from ‘ambient dream folk’ group French For Rabbits.
3pm: Instore performance from ‘Pan-generational Wellington supergroup’ TEETH, celebrating the release of their self-titled debut album, available as a strictly limited edition CD through our own Slow Boat Records label.
The group features The Phoenix Foundation’s Lukasz Buda and Tom Callwood, together with 'legendary drummer' Anthony Donaldson and David Long (Mutton Birds).

Also in Wellington, check out Rough Peel Music in Cuba St (live instore from NameUL and DJs), and Mint Music in Lower Hutt.

Further South, head along to Galaxy and Pennylane in Christchurch, and Relics in Dunedin.
